Las Vegas Gambling Tips: Naked Eskimo (Continued)

On The Town With Vegas Vic
By: Victor H. Royer

Welcome to Las Vegas! My name is Victor H. Royer, but everyone just calls me Vegas Vic. I was named after that famous neon sign in Downtown Las Vegas, that cowboy with the hat on top of the Pioneer Club, always waving his hand and beckoning to his long love, Sassy Sally, on the other side of the street. I will be writing a few articles for AccessVegas.com, so I hope you enjoy them.

Naked Eskimo (Continued)

The river brought a brick. It was now that I got to cap the betting. This brought looks of great surprise from all the players. Just before showing my hand, I quietly said:

“Gentlemen, I have The Naked Eskimo.”

At this point they all looked at me even more strangely, until the under the gun player finally asked: “What is a naked Eskimo?”

As I turned over my cards, I said calmly: “The stone cold nuts!”

There was a shocked moment of silence, followed by an absolute roar of laughter that lasted for about five minutes. Needless to say we caused quite a commotion, and many other people came to see what was happening.

This was quite early in my Hold’Em career. Mostly, I played Seven Card Stud in those days. This game happened during the holidays in 1983, in Hollywood, at the home of a very famous Hollywood actor. Sadly, this person is now deceased. At the time however, this was indeed a magic time. There were more stars at that poker game than there are in heaven. And even more at the party. There were so many famous people there, that to this day I can’t remember all of them, and at the time I certainly didn’t know many of them. They were older than I remembered them from the movies, or from television, but I didn’t mind. They seemed like nice people, and I fit perfectly well, and so I was just as comfortable in having just as good a time as they did.

It was not until quite later, actually at the New Year’s Eve party, where one of the hosts at that particular party came up to me and said how refreshing everybody found the fact that I wasn’t gushing over the stars when I met them, and played poker with them. Apparently, they all thought that it nice that somebody like myself would be behaving so naturally and have such a great time without ever asking for an autograph, or asking them about their careers, or anything else. It seems that because of that they invited me to a whole lot of parties with a whole lot of really great and famous people. And, they also liked my joke about the Naked Eskimo.

So, next time you have a great poker hand, whatever that great poker hand may be, as long as it is the best hand for that particular round and game, and it is time for you to turn it over and show it, just say that you have “The Naked Eskimo”. It should get you laugh, or at least the giggle. And when you do, perhaps you will remember along with me that time not so long ago when great stars of Hollywood motion pictures and television played a little game of Texas Hold’Em at a party, in the twilight years of grand and glorious Hollywood.
